Introducing Teddy. Teddy is an energetic and loving boy who is ready for his forever home.
On January 6, 2018, 3 puppies were born into a freezing winter evening on a stranger’s porch. Joan Jett, the mama, and her pups came into the CRT program the next day. Teddy (formally Tom Petty) was adopted into a loving home and had excellent care for almost six years. Unfortunately, his owner had to give him up due to serious medical issues that meant she could no longer give Teddy the attention he requires. He is currently with the family that took him in as a foster the day after he was born.
Teddy is now 7 years old and in excellent health. His mother was a chihuahua/min-pin mix but from the looks of Teddy, his father was some kind of terrier mix. Teddy is a lean eleven pounds, which is perfect for his frame. He sports the very jaunty “one ear up, one down” look that suits his personality well. He is an energetic dog that not only LOVES to walk and play but really needs an owner that will exercise him. He can keep up with about any level of activity and currently walks 4 to 5 miles a day and loves every step. If you pick up his leash and harness, you better be ready to go because he will get excited. He also likes to play ball and run in the yard.
Teddy is very connected to the people in his immediate family and very protective, especially of the women in his family. Teddy has the temperament of a terrier and a working dog. He forms strong bonds and is very eager to please his people. His foster parents are able to trim that unruly terrier hair themselves, no matter where it is growing, with no fuss from Teddy! He is also smart and stubborn. Some commands, such as “bed,” as in “Get in your bed while we are eating dinner,” take a more firm hand and a repetition of the command before Teddy submits. He is working on his commands and has mastered “sit,” getting better at “stay” (he will come look for you if you step out of his sight) and starting to work on “down.” He does not like competition from other dogs and could easily be an only dog. Teddy is house broken and very reliable for long periods of time. He is best suited to walking on a leash as opposed to running lose in a dog park. Teddy is crate trained and will happily sleep through the night. He can also use a dog door but prefers his people to join him outside. He wants to be with his people as much as possible and will snuggle and spend much time in your lap as he can.
We love Teddy’s unique look. We knew his Mom was a Chihuahua / Min Pin mix, but decided to run a DNA test on him to get a better idea of his background. Teddy’s DNA test revealed that he is
37.5% Miniature Pinscher,
25% Chihuahua,
12.5% Miniature Poodle,
12.5% Shih Tzu and
12.5% Breed Groups (sporting, terrier, companion and guard)
The perfect home for Teddy is one with high to moderate activity and a lot of love. Teddy needs an owner that will be a strong and loving Alpha. His adopters will need to be patient and mindful when Teddy meets new people and animals. As mentioned, he has a working dog mentality and requires a job—like daily walks and exercise. He does alert to visitors and even though he loves to bark, he does not like loud noises (the garbage disposal is his arch nemesis, and he will give a DART bus a piece of his mind as well).
