Dexter was born on February 1, 2019, and is a six-pound Chihuahua. When he arrived at CRT, his belly was so full of fluid that it was dragging on the ground, and his back legs were extremely swollen. After extensive testing, including X-rays, and lab work, it was discovered that Dexter has a protein deficiency. His body cannot digest or process proteins the way animals are supposed to. As a result, he cannot eat standard dog food and must have a specialized diet consisting of high-protein foods such as cooked chicken breast, turkey, venison, bison, and hard-boiled duck eggs, along with special supplements. Additionally, Dexter cannot eat the same foods continuously because his body adjusts to them, which causes him to retain fluid, become achy, and grow irritable. He is on a daily regimen of Prednisone and takes Lasix when necessary.
Dexter does not like to eat alone and prefers to have someone with him during mealtime. He also needs encouragement to eat and must be monitored to ensure he drinks enough water. Maintaining his weight within the appropriate range is crucial because his tendency to refuse food can lead to rapid weight loss, which is detrimental to his health. Managing Dexter’s dietary needs is a daily challenge that involves meal preparation, cooking, supplement administration, and motivating him to eat.
Currently, Dexter is doing well and has more good days than bad. His abdomen is measured daily to check for fluid retention, and his weight is closely monitored. Despite his serious medical condition, Dexter is a loving little dog who enjoys giving kisses, snuggling, and spending time with his family and furry siblings. He loves playing in the fenced yard but strongly dislikes rainy weather.
Dexter also suffered from a lateral luxating patella, and although surgery was an option, there was no guarantee of long-term success. There was also concern that he might have an unusual form of cancer. After much discussion, it was decided that the best course of action for Dexter was to amputate his right rear leg. A biopsy later confirmed that he had a form of joint cancer, and amputation was the only effective solution. Thankfully, by removing the affected limb, Dexter is now considered cured.
Dexter has quickly adjusted to life as a tripod and is thriving. He continues to bring joy to those around him with his affectionate and resilient spirit.
