Say hello to Rosie, a very sweet and smart 8-9 year old black and tan girl!
Rosie came to CRT from a local shelter. She had been found as a stray and though microchipped, her family never came to get her. She was very frightened in the shelter, so they gave her a red cave bed so she could have safe spot to feel more secure. When she came to CRT, she arrived with the cave bed.
Rose fit in with the other dogs in the home and picked up on the routine fairly quickly. But when she felt unsure, she would retreat to her cave bed. She seemed very sad.
These days Rosie doesn’t spend much time in her cave bed and is a happy girl! She loves belly rubs, walks and especially food and treats! Rosie spins and barks with excitement when it’s meal or treat time and gobbles them up. Sometimes when her foster mom is working she will sit up on her hind legs and silently beg for a treat (but is happy with some pets or lap time if it isn’t treat time). Please note that at close to 9 pounds, Rosie is overweight (according to our vet she should weigh closer to 7 pounds) and needs strict, measured portion control and no free feeding or unlimited treats. She does well on her high quality, low fat, high fiber kibble and her foster mom sometimes gives her frozen green beans as a treat. She loves them!
In addition to being overweight, Rosie has a lipoma on her chest that hangs down. The vet told us that it should not be removed as it doesn’t affect Rosie’s health or mobility in any way. Neither her current weight or the lipoma affect her mobility in any way – she walks, runs and spins with no issues.
Rosie is completely housebroken and truly prefers to do her business outside. She will use a pee pad only as a very last resort. She loves to go outside and bark at unseen noises with her foster siblings and sniff around. Because she will bark at noises and her bark is big for a smaller dog, she is not apartment appropriate. For her safety, neither Rosie or her foster siblings are left unattended when they are outside. Rosie will pick up things on the ground but drops them when she is told. Please note that Rosie will run out an open door if given the opportunity, so a gate or other barrier is needed to prevent that.
Rosie does enjoy squeaky toys and will play fetch, but after one of her foster sisters kept taking toys away from her, she has been hesitant to play with them if that foster sister is around. But every once in a while her foster mom will see Rosie sneak one into her bed and hide it under her blanket to squeak on.
The perfect home for Rosie would be calm, yet moderately active and able to take her for daily walks as well as be diligent with continuing her weight loss journey. She would do well with another small dog, and someone home during the day would be ideal. Rosie can be a little unsure in new situations and with new people, so her future family needs to recognize and respect that, let Rosie have her space and become accustomed to new people and surroundings at her own speed. Her red cave bed will come with her. Rosie’s foster mom says that Rosie has been one of the best fosters ever and hopes to find the best forever home ever for her!
