UPDATE!  6-29-08

Hi there, everybody. I just wanted to introduce you to one of my friends, Shauna Grainger. She didn't used to be my friend at the very first, because she was trying to drown me, but now I like her a lot. She owns Hot Diggity Dog, a canine water fitness facility, and works with all sorts of dogs who have problems and need therapy (www.caninewaterfitness.com). She's in Kentucky, so that wouldn't help a lot of you, but you can get some good information off her website.  I got to walk on a treadmill, right in the water! It helped me a lot once I figured out what was going on, and now I can run faster than Shauna and I'll bet on a race track she'd be huffing and puffing about a hundred yards behind me!

I still get so excited by running and playing that my mom has to keep a close eye on me, because she doesn't want me to get hurt. All those months of bandages and treadmill therapy and other stuff are barely a memory for me, but she sure does remember.

Anyway, here's a big thank you to Shauna for donating lots of treadmill time and for loving me enough to do it!  Thanks, Shauna!

(maybe if I'm real nice to her, she'll let me be her poster boy<g>)

Love, The Squeak

UPDATE!  6-03-08

Success! Squeak's elbows are staying in place, he's running and playing like a normal pup his age, and his little bones and tendons strengthen every day. He is now in his permanent home, with a huge yard, and several little Chi brothers and sisters. One of our volunteers, who is able to provide on-going medical care/support if necessary, has adopted him, and he will continue his treadmill sessions as needed. His legs look straight strong, and his greatest joy is running across the huge yard, playing and chasing.

Pictures and a narrative of Squeak's story will be posted in a separate section a little later.

We want to thank all of you who have inquired about him, donated towards his procedures, and cared enough to follow his progress. He's truly a miracle pup!

UPDATE!  4-10-08

Hey, everybody! Look at my new legs! They're nice and straight, but now I have to strengthen all the tendons and ligaments, and learn how to use them, because they still bend in both directions at the elbows. I try to hold them straight back, like little wings, and walk on my rear legs the way I've learned.  My foster mom has a plan, though, and guess what? It involves water! I get to swim and walk on an underwater treadmill. We did it for the first time today, and it was so much fun! I just used my legs the right way, and it felt pretty weird, but everybody was so impressed that I just might keep on doing it.

I'm so excited! Maybe my mom will take me to a beach and I could swim in a lake, and I'll bet I could swim all the way across a whole lake!

Okay, maybe not.  But it would be fun anyway<g>.

I heard my foster mom saying that she *thought* this would work to strengthen my legs, but no one seems sure. Sometimes it's lonely being the only little guy anywhere who is having this done. I wish I had a buddy to talk to about it. My friends, Penelope and Olivia, both had funny front legs too, but not as bad as mine. They're great to play with, and Penelope and I mouthfight a lot -- that's the most fun. She looks a lot like me, but she's walking on her legs and will be swimming with me, too, sometimes. Maybe I'll send some pictures of her and me mouthfighting. People don't do that so much, but we think it's great fun!

And last, I want to thank all my friends for supporting me by donating their hard-earned money. My mom explained about that to me, and I can't believe that people who don't even know me are willing to give me a chance. That's pretty cool!  I guess depending on the kindness of strangers isn't such a long-shot at all.  I just hope you all keep coming through for me; I still have a ways to go.

Love, Squeak

Well, hello! I'm Squeakachu, and I'm finally able to tell you about myself. I got here last week, after I was so rudely dumped in a shelter, rescued by a kind person, and driven all the way to Cincinnati, OH.  I brought a lot of friends with me, but my foster mom murdered them because they were almost as big as me. She said they were "fleas" and weren't allowed in her house. I do feel much better now - all clean and sweet-smelling. I'm seven weeks old and I weigh 1.6 lbs, and I can hop just exactly like a bunny!

Okay, so hopping like a bunny isn't something you look for in a little Chi. I know.  But I have to do it because my 'arms' are deformed and twisted. They're calling it severe elbow luxation with my wrists twisted all the way around in a 180 degree angle. I hop with my back legs and push with my elbows, and they're getting all red and sore.

Update:  I got my legs fixed! Well, they're beginning to be fixed, anyway. I dozed off Monday morning, after a big needle stick, and when I woke up, there were two huge bandages on me. And it hurt! But someone gave me something again and it was just like I was in The Wizard of Oz, a great big poppy field.....  Now that it's been a few days, I feel better and I'm struggling to get up and go! These bandages are pretty heavy though. It's going to take a while for me to master them. In any case, I'm on my way to walking and running and playing....

* Squeakachu was dumped in a shelter, rescued by a woman who pulls dogs regularly for a no-kill shelter, and brought down here to us. He was terribly thin and starving to death, and still inhales his food in less than five seconds. Other than the leg deformity, he's a strong, basically healthy little guy, and should do well. He's a longcoat, tricolor, and will be a beautiful little Chi when he's grown. He also has a terrific temperament -- outgoing, friendly, and playful.

I'm not sure how to tell you all what I had done to me. It's new, it only works if you're a little tiny young guy like me. They turned my legs when I was sleeping, all the way around to where they should be. Then they put big splints on them to hold them in place, and wrapped them all up. We're all hoping they grow nice and straight now, but there were some problems with my left leg being a little loose in the joint. If it doesn't grow right, I might get a pin in it. I don't think they mean a big old safety pin sticking out like I'm some sort of stuffed toy, but you never know.  Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that if you have a leg or arm that's kind of crooked, DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!
